Military Cases for Film & TV Set Dressing:
The Definitive Production Guide

Authentic. Sourced. Shipped worldwide. We’ve worked on productions from the UK to Australia — and we can do the same for yours.

When a production designer needs military cases on set, there is one question that matters above everything else: are they real? Audiences — and the directors, DoPs, and prop masters who serve them — have an instinct for authenticity that no plastic replica or theatrical prop can satisfy. The weight, the wear, the stencilling, the hardware — genuine ex-military equipment reads differently on camera, and differently again in the room. At Surplus Cases we supply the real thing: genuine ex-military flight cases, Peli cases, Hardigg cases, Zarges aluminium cases, and specialist rack cases sourced directly from UK and US military disposal channels. And we do a great deal more than simply sell them.

Why Authenticity Matters on a Military Set

A military operations room, a field base, a covert equipment depot, a Special Forces insertion point — these environments are defined by their equipment. And the equipment that defines them, more than almost anything else, is the case. Military hard cases are the visual shorthand for capability, preparation, and serious operational intent. They appear in every genre: espionage thrillers, combat dramas, disaster procedurals, documentary reconstructions, and high-end commercials for defence and technology brands.

The problem with sourcing military cases from general prop houses is that general prop houses stock theatrical approximations — cases built or modified to look military, not cases that actually are. The difference is immediately apparent to anyone who has seen the real thing, and your production’s technical advisors, veterans consultants, and savvy audience members will notice. Genuine ex-military cases carry the marks of real service: the stencilled unit markings, the handling wear on the corners, the specific hardware configurations that differ by era and procurement batch. No replica gets this right. We supply the originals.

What We Stock for Productions

Our inventory is drawn directly from UK and US military disposal channels, giving us access to a range of genuine cases that no theatrical prop supplier can match for authenticity or variety. Our current stock for production use includes:

Ex-Military Flight Cases

The quintessential military case — plywood and aluminium construction, butterfly latches, corner protectors, foam-lined interiors. Available in a range of sizes from compact carry cases to large transit units. Many retain original stencilling and unit markings. Ideal for operations room dressing, vehicle interiors, field base set dressing, and background action.

Hardigg & Peli Military Cases

US and UK military-procurement Peli and Hardigg cases with NSN markings, military-spec hardware, and original foam. These are the cases seen in contemporary military drama, special forces content, and defence-sector productions. We stock multiple sizes and configurations — including rack-mount cases and long transit cases.

Zarges Aluminium Cases

British military Zarges cases with the distinctive ribbed aluminium construction and original hardware. A staple of British Armed Forces logistics and widely recognised as an authentically British military aesthetic. Highly effective for period-contemporary productions set in the 1980s through present day.

Rack Mount & Server Cases

Military communications and server rack cases with integrated rack frames and original wiring harnesses. Ideal for technical operations environments, signals units, intelligence centre sets, and any scene requiring operational computing infrastructure. These are among the most effective and least commonly sourced items in military set dressing.

We Consult. We Don’t Just Sell.

The most valuable thing we offer a production isn’t a case — it’s knowledge. We work with production designers and prop masters from the earliest stages of pre-production, advising on period accuracy, configuration, quantity, and arrangement. A military scene that uses the wrong case for the period — or the wrong case for the unit type — will be flagged by every technical advisor and informed viewer. We help you avoid those mistakes before they reach the set.

Our consultation service covers:

  • Period accuracy — which case types were in service during your production’s era
  • Unit and nationality identification — British, US, NATO, and other forces have distinct case procurement preferences and markings
  • Configuration advice — how cases are arranged, stacked, labelled, and used operationally, for authentic background dressing
  • Quantity planning — how many cases a given environment would realistically contain, and in what configurations
  • Sourcing specific items — if you need a case type we do not currently have in stock, we will find it through our disposal network

This is not a service you will find at a general prop house. It comes from years of handling genuine military equipment and understanding how it is used in the field.

We Ship Worldwide — Including to Australia

Military productions are not confined to the UK. We have worked on productions that required genuine British and US military cases to be sourced, prepared, and shipped to locations including continental Europe, the Middle East, North America, and as far as Australia. International production is now the norm for major drama, and the logistics of supplying authentic military dressing across international borders is something we handle routinely.

Cases are prepared for international transit — properly packed, documented, and shipped with accurate customs declarations. We work with production logistics teams and transport coordinators to ensure that what you need arrives on time, in the condition you require, wherever in the world your production is shooting. The fact that a production is based in Sydney, Toronto, or Johannesburg does not change our ability to supply it — it simply changes the logistics conversation, which we are experienced in having.

Sale or Hire: We Work the Way Your Production Works

Some productions want to buy outright — particularly when cases are being used as hero props or when the production is shooting at remote locations where returns logistics are impractical. Others prefer to hire, keeping costs on the correct budget line and avoiding the complexities of disposing of prop stock after wrap. We accommodate both approaches and can advise on which makes most sense for your specific production structure and schedule.

For large set-dressing requirements we can put together a full case specification — a structured inventory of case types, quantities, and configurations matched to your set design brief — and either supply it as a package purchase or as a hire with return logistics built in.
